Barlinek was initially a fishing settlement in Greater Poland, after which it was incorporated into the Neumark. Since the end of World War II, Barlinek has been part of Western Pomerania. The town was formerly known as Nova Berlyn and Klein Berlin. Before 1945, it had the German name Berlinchen. The name Barlinek was officially introduced by a decree of the Ministers of Public Administration and Recovered Territories of November 12, 1946. Previously, the name Berlinek, dating back to pre-war times, had been used for a short period after the war.
