Inside the Muslim Manosphere: Masculinity, Polygamy & Power
#manosphere #muslimmarriage #polygamyinislam Assalamu alaykum In this thought-provoking podcast, I sit down with my son for a deeply reflective and honest conversation exploring both the secular and Muslim manosphere. Together, we unpack the growing influence of online spaces that shape modern ideas of masculinity, relationships, and gender roles. Drawing on insights from Louis Theroux’s powerful documentary 'Inside the Manosphere', we examine how social media personalities tap into male insecurity, often promoting harmful narratives that commodify and objectify women. We explore how these ideas are not confined to secular spaces, but are increasingly mirrored within segments of the Muslim manosphere. A key focus of our discussion is the broader socio-economic context—particularly the role of neoliberal economics, the extreme concentration of wealth among a small male elite and the rise of right wing politics. We reflect on how these dynamics contribute to social stagnation, limit mobility, and reinforce unhealthy models of success and masculinity. We also critically engage with the topic of polygamy, discussing how it is frequently tied to performative notions of masculinity and, in some cases, promoted through exploitative business models. In contrast, I present the argument that the Qur’anic framework points toward monogamy as the natural, ethical and spiritual model of marriage. Using a case study, we highlight how Muslim women can be commodified within the polygamous marriage market. Importantly, we conclude by sharing practical tips on how individuals—especially young men—can resist the pull of manosphere ideologies and build healthier, more grounded perspectives. This is a candid, nuanced conversation aimed at encouraging reflection on a complex topic with moral and social implications.
