Do we really choose? Or does our decision begin before we become aware of it? In this lecture, we discuss one of the most complex problems in modern philosophy and science: free will. Is the human being free in making decisions? Or do the brain, genes, childhood, environment, and the unconscious all shape the decision before it appears to us as a choice? We begin with the view of neuroscientist Robert Sapolsky in his book Determined, where he defends the idea that the human being is the product of a vast network of biological, neurological, and social causes. Then we move to philosopher Alfred Mele in his book Free: Why Science Hasn’t Disproved Free Will, to ask: Has science really proven that free will is an illusion? Or is the problem in the way we interpret scientific experiments such as Libet’s experiment and Soon’s experiment? Finally, we turn to analytic philosopher Jordan Howard Sobel, to see how logic and language can make the problem of freedom appear settled, even though it is not always so.
