We Didn't Quit! Overnight Beach Camping & Shark Fishing on South Padre Island

Others are measured by the memories you make. This weekend's overnight beach camping trip to South Padre Island reminded us why we keep coming back. The surf was rough, recent storms had turned the water into chocolate milk, shell-covered sandbars shredded our lines, and the current forced us to fish with heavy 8-ounce spider weights. Time after time, big fish broke us off before we could ever see what was on the other end. But we refused to quit. Jeremy got the action started with a beautiful blacktip shark before heading home to process his catch. My son Robby and his friend Adrian kept us entertained by catching plenty of whiting and catfish before making the drive back to Houston. Rey from Blue Lines 5.0 kept everyone's spirits high and treated us to an incredible carne asada dinner after an exhausting day on the beach. Just when we thought the day couldn't get any tougher, Smiley Caballero—the owner of Saltwater Samurai Weight and Tackle—hooked into an incredible 8-foot bull shark that made every broken line and lost fish worth the effort. Watching him battle and safely release that shark was a moment none of us will forget. As night fell, we gathered around the campfire, shared stories, enjoyed a few cold drinks, and looked forward to something special. Roland and his wife Ana spent the night slow-smoking homemade barbacoa in their portable pellet smoker, giving us an unforgettable beach breakfast the next morning.
