It was built on three separate slopes separated from each other by the valleys where Santa Yanbolu Stream originates. It was included in the lands of the Ottoman Empire with the conquest of the Eastern Black Sea between 1461-1476 during the reign of Mehmet the Conqueror. Due to the efficient operation of the silver mines extracted with the existing iron and lead in the Santa basin, the region developed significantly and reached economic prosperity in the period between the 16th and 18th centuries. Santa region, which has religious, commercial and cultural importance, has been declared as an 'Archaeological and Natural Site' today.
