Her musical journey commenced under the guidance of her father, Dr. Srinivasan, and was further enriched through tutelage from esteemed mentors such as Dr. S. Ramanathan and Smt. T. Muktha. In addition to her musical prowess, Dr. Sowmya boasts impressive academic credentials. She holds master's degrees in both Chemistry and Indian Music and earned her Ph.D. from the University of Madras in 2012, focusing her research on the physical characteristics of the mridangam, a traditional percussion instrument. Dr. Sowmya's career is marked by numerous accolades and significant positions. Demonstrating her commitment to the advancement of fine arts education, she was appointed Vice Chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Dr. J Jayalalithaa Music & Fine Arts University on April 8, 2022, for a three-year term.
