David Livingstone - Teaching is my passion

David Livingstone is a Head teacher at Venus Star Academy Juba South Sudan. Teaching is not only a job to him but a passion too. More than 70%, or 2.8 million children, are out of school in South Sudan. Without assistance, a generation of children will grow up with limited - if any - access to learning. It puts at risk their future and the future of the country. Teachers are integral to changing this but, currently, 63% of teachers do not have any formal training and many receive limited assistance. As a result, UNICEF and partners is investing in teachers by, for example, supporting their training, payment and retention. In addition to assisting teachers, we're supporting the building of classrooms, the development and printing of textbooks, the drilling of boreholes in schools so children can access clean drinking water, and we're working with communities to encourage parents and caregivers to send their children to school.
