EP. 58. La Ruta de la Seda: la Porta Oest de la Gran Muralla a Jiayuguan i el Gran Buda de Zhangye.

In this episode we discover Jiayuguan and Zhangye, two historical treasures of China at the end of the Hexi Corridor, inseparable from the legendary Silk Road. In Jiayuguan we visit the majestic fort, known as “the first and last gate of the Great Wall”. This impressive defensive bastion, built in the 14th century during the Ming Dynasty, guarded the entrance to the west and protected the Chinese Empire from possible invasions, while controlling the passage of caravans and traders. In Zhangye, a city that flourished thanks to trade routes, we marvel at the Great Reclining Buddha at Dafo Temple. At over 34 meters long, it is one of the largest reclining Buddha statues in China and symbolizes the spiritual importance that the Silk Road brought to these lands: a meeting point for merchants, travelers and religions. Zhangye is also remembered because, according to tradition, Marco Polo lived there for more than a year, testifying to the vitality of this city at the height of the era of the great trade routes.
