Hello everyone, Nenashev with you, and today we're featuring perhaps the most romantic painting in the world in our Masterpieces collection. Klimt painted "The Kiss" during the most difficult period of his life. A five-year scandal involving faculty paintings had just died down. The University of Vienna rejected a commission from Klimt, deeming it provocatively indecent, almost pornographic. Klimt idolized women. He never married, which allowed him to sleep with almost all of his models. This ultimately led to a phenomenal 14 children, although he only officially acknowledged six. However, he lived his entire life with his mentally ill mother, returning to her every day from the bed he shared with his latest mistress. The female body, nudity, sensuality, and ambition—perhaps the most important passion in his life. And this was naturally reflected in his work. This is what happened with the scandal of the University Paintings. In 1900, eight years before The Kiss was painted, the University of Vienna commissioned four ceiling paintings. Klimt sketched the designs and won three of the four commissions. They were to depict the leading sciences: Philosophy, Medicine, and Law. The fourth, Theology, was commissioned from Franz von Matsch, a friend of Klimt's. In that same year, Klimt presented the first of these paintings, Philosophy, at an exhibition. Unfortunately, these paintings have not survived to this day; they were burned by retreating Wehrmacht troops in 1945. However, photographs of these paintings remain, and I can show you them. Philosophy immediately caused a profound shock in the scientific community. The result not only didn't match the sketches, it depicted the future of science as extremely pessimistic and even featured a scattering of naked female bodies. Unthinkable! How could such a thing be hung on the ceiling of a temple of science? Oh, if only those hard-headed academics could read the future! However, at the Paris exhibition, the painting became a star and won a gold medal. The second painting in the series, Medicine, added fuel to the fire. Viennese newspapers erupted in indignation, and the scientific community accused Klimt of pornography. Passions ran so high that in the third painting, Klimt completely lost it, declaring that he wouldn't waste time on reworking it. And in 1905, Klimt returned the advance payment for the paintings, declaring that he would never again work for a government client.
