We, Silvia and Jan, bought Villa Vreeburg in Bellingwolde in 2022 to restore this heavily dilapidated yet beautiful property to its former glory and to build a beautiful new life here in Bellingwolde, with the additional goal of being as self-sufficient as possible, including a beautiful vegetable garden. Our children, who have long since grown up, including our daughter, have come along with our grandchildren. The house is more than large enough to give everyone their own front door, so not really together in one building but each on their own; however, we are doing the renovation together. Everything on the property is broken: windows, doors, frames, roofs, floors; no gas, electricity, nothing works, not even water—well, there is a connection, but that is about it. Given that Jan has been a renovation carpenter for over 30 years and certainly possesses all the skills and knowledge to rebuild Villa Vreeburg, we dare to take on this adventure. The financing that was promised to us by our financial advisor during the purchase negotiations for the restoration—which was set to cost €220,000 to turn it into a zero-energy home—never materialized, unfortunately. Nevertheless, we remain optimistic, and it will take us much longer, but this will not deter us from our dream of continuing to live in a wonderful villa in beautiful Groningen.
