It originally began as a trumpet concerto. Throughout the piece, the piano and the trumpet seem to have a lovely conversation, sometimes supporting each other and sometimes playfully interrupting one another. The music is full of humor, parody, showing Shostakovich's sharp wit and creativity. His experience as a silent-film pianist can also be heard in the work's dramatic mood changes and fast-moving, cinematic style. The work combines brilliant piano virtuosity with a playful and often sarcastic character, and dazzling passages come together in a thrilling finale. Seong-Jin Cho's performance of Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No.1 with James Vaughen, Yannick and The Philadelphia Orchestra received high praise for both its technical brilliance and musical sophistication. Medici.tv called it a 'note-perfect rendition', highlighting the wit and character of the concerto, while The Philadelphia Orchestra described Cho as an 'astonishing' pianist with exceptional sensitivity, nuance, fluidity and elegance...
