Teaching My GRANDPA Gen Z BRAINROT Slang!
Upon first glance, the narrative of this video perpetuates a stigma regarding “useless” and "valueless" content based on the culture of brainrot and gen Z’s dopamine-driven antics. However, one can begin to notice a juxtaposition, or irony, that contradicts such a face value assumption. From a surface-level perspective, this video appears to lack depth or any meaningful nuance in gen Z terms, some even dismissing it as garbage. However, unpacking this phenomenon is a segue to revealing how intertwined culture and language is, even trickling down to seemingly senseless terms tossed around like 'skibidi toilet'. Slang is arguably more prevalent in this day and age considering rapid globalization as well the unprecedented amount of reliance on the internet in influencing one’s behaviours — especially in the youth. This video can be interpreted as stark evidence of how online communities can impact a person’s daily life, even down to their vernacular.
