Today in the Woodyard, we finish up stacking the IBC Totes. In order to get them full, I needed to cut up one more ash log. So, I brought up another six footer and we cut four nice 16 inch rounds. Two of these rounds are going to go to filling the IBC Totes and the other two rounds will go to a head to head comparison coming up in the next video with the Wolfe Ridge MFG 17VS-C and the 35 SHO Box Wedge. While splitting this ash, I came across some blue streaking in the wood, which is common indicator for steel or metal within the wood. Sure enough, found a nail about 20 years into the growth rings. I also did a quick count of the growth rings because I split right on the pith or the center of the tree, this 18–19“ American Ash was about 75 years old counting rings. Pretty cool, I don’t remember the last time I took the time to count the rings on a tree. When was the last time you did it? Each time I use the 17VS-C I notice that I perfect the process just a little bit more. I trust the knife, and the my foot to split where I want, & when I want. It’s pretty cool, when you build the confidence to go just a little bit faster. You develop a rhythm of when to raise your foot to start the next cycle.
