Did They Talk to You About Knee Replacements? Do These 6 Exercises to Strengthen Your Knees Do you experience knee pain, stiffness when getting up, or fear of climbing stairs? In this video, Dr. Martín Salvatierra León presents six chair exercises to strengthen the muscles that protect your knees, improve mobility, and walk more safely after age 60. These exercises do not completely regenerate lost cartilage, nor do they guarantee you won't need a knee replacement. However, clinical guidelines recommend exercise as one of the primary treatments for knee osteoarthritis because it can reduce pain, strengthen muscles, and improve physical function. The first movement is gentle leg swings. Sit in a chair that's high enough and swing one leg forward and backward like a small pendulum. Practice for one to three minutes, without forcing the extension. This movement helps you gradually transition from immobility to activity and can temporarily reduce stiffness. The second exercise is gluteal contractions. Gently squeeze your gluteal muscles for three to eight seconds, then relax. The glutes help stabilize the hip and control thigh position, allowing for better distribution of effort while walking. The third movement involves gently engaging your abdominal muscles. As you exhale, draw your navel slightly in without blocking your breath. Hold for three seconds and relax. A more stable core helps control your pelvis when walking, turning, or getting up from a chair. The fourth exercise works your toes and arches. Keep your heel on the ground and curl your toes as if you were trying to grab a towel. Then open them completely. Do up to fifteen repetitions per foot. More stable support from the ground can improve coordination between your foot, ankle, knee, and hip. The fifth movement is seated heel raises. Keeping your toes on the ground, raise your heels, hold for up to three seconds, and lower them slowly. Start with ten repetitions and gradually increase the number. This exercise strengthens the calves and improves ankle control. The sixth exercise is the supported stand-up and sit-down. Place a sturdy chair against a wall, bring your feet close together, lean your torso slightly forward, and stand up using the armrests if needed. Then lower yourself slowly without letting yourself fall. Start with five repetitions. This movement directly trains an essential ability for maintaining independence. You don't need to complete all the repetitions from the first day. Practice within a tolerable range and increase gradually. Mild discomfort during the exercise may occur, but the pain should not increase significantly or be noticeably worse the next day. ⏱️ TIMELINE 00:00 Why Knees Need Movement and Strength 01:30 Exercise 1: Gentle Leg Swings 04:16 Exercise 2: Glute Squeeze 06:49 Exercise 3: Abdominal Activation 09:36 Exercise 4: Toe Curls 12:36 Exercise 5: Heel Raises 15:11 Exercise 6: Stand-Up and Sit-Down Exercises 17:52 Weekly Routine and Final Recommendations ⚠️ WARNING Stop the routine if you experience sharp pain, rapid swelling, knee locking, significant instability, dizziness, or shortness of breath. Consult a doctor before starting if you have recently fallen, injured, had surgery, suffered a fracture, or have a knee replacement. Seek medical attention if your knee is very hot and red, you cannot bear weight on it, you develop a fever, or it suddenly swells. Do not delay a recommended surgical evaluation based solely on internet exercises. 📚 ACADEMIC AND CLINICAL RESOURCES AAOS — Guide to Osteoarthritis of the Knee: https://www.aaos.org/globalassets/qua...
