It was announced in March 2005, although it wasn't initially announced as a sequel until later, when magazines like Famitsu and CoroCoro confirmed it. It's for the Nintendo GameCube console, and is the last Pokémon video game released for that platform. It was released in Japan on August 4, 2005, while in North America it was released on October 3, 2005, in Europe on November 18, 2005, and in Australia on November 10, 2005. It quickly achieved considerable sales despite having less advertising compared to Pokémon Colosseum. On March 18, 2026, the game was added to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack catalog. The initials XD stand for eXtra Dimension. Shadow Pokémon reappear, and the player's objective is once again to capture them from their trainers with the PokéSnare and purify them to return them to their normal state. Once this is done, they can level up, evolve, and be transferred to the main third-generation games once the Pokémon Center in Oasis City allows trading with those versions. In this sequel, the Legendary Pillar returns as the traditional purification method, and the Purification Chamber debuts, a faster and more convenient way to purify Shadow Pokémon. Shadow Pokémon possess exclusive moves known as Shadow Moves, the number of which has increased. When purified, these Pokémon lose these moves.
