GPS GUIDED DRIVE LONDON CITY 2 4miles 12min From Greenwich, Deptford to Rotherhithe

Driving through South East London from Greenwich High Road to Rotherhithe Old Road is a masterclass in urban contrast, a journey where historic London and hyper-modern development constantly collide. Setting off from the relative familiarity of Greenwich, the drive quickly takes an unexpected, almost surreal turn starting at 1:11min of the video, when the GPS steered us away from the main thoroughfare and down onto Norman Road toward Creek Road. Here is why my thumbnail appeared to be so. I fast forward the long bumpy muddy road actually. The traditional, brick-laden London landscape completely vanished, replaced by massive, towering construction projects, skeletal scaffolding, and clinical high-rises that feel entirely disconnected from the historic city. Navigating this pocket of intensive regeneration triggers an unsettling, disorienting sensation—a sudden wave of doubt where I felt genuinely lost, as if we have inadvertently driven straight off the map of London and into a sterile, futuristic pop-up city. Once you clear that jarring pocket of construction and merge firmly onto Creek Road, the driving reality settles into the familiar, high-stakes dance of London transit. The road transitions into the bustling, tightly packed corridors of Deptford, where you are forced to contend with narrow lanes, bumpy at times, aggressive cyclist superhighways, and the stop-and-start friction of local buses pulling in and out of traffic. Moving northwest toward Evelyn Street, the urban fabric constantly shifts between old dockland industrial plots, traditional pubs, and newly minted apartment complexes. By the time you finally approach the sprawling roundabout system of Rotherhithe Old Road, the driving experience morphs yet again into a fast-paced, multi-lane urban hub. Some facts about Deptford, London The surreal, quiet isolation and disorienting feeling I had on Norman Road makes total sense once you look at the history. We essentially drove straight through the epicenter of one of London’s most aggressive industrial-to-residential transformations: Deptford Creek.For centuries, this wasn't a place where people lived—it was where London did its heaviest, dirtiest work.The Industrial heart between 1600s – 1980s, historically, Deptford Creek was a bustling, muddy, industrial artery fed by the River Ravensbourne. Because it sits right next to the historic Greenwich Royal Dockyard, it became a massive hub for shipbuilding, marine engineering, chemical works, gasworks, and coal wharves. If you look at old sketches of the area, you'll see mostly forest of ship masts, smoking chimneys, and heavy timber wharves. It was grimy, functional, and strictly commercial. When the London docks declined in the mid-to-late 20th century, the Creek became a graveyard of derelict warehouses, scrap yards, and low-rise industrial sheds. What we saw on Norman Road is the result of massive planning and ongoing heavy construction projects that turned these old brownfield plots into high-density housing zones at present. Driving through it felt like passing through a giant, unfinished architectural model, which is exactly why my brain flagged it as "not looking like it's London."
