Inside The Abandoned Fishermans Bend Engine Plant: The Tragic Death of the Grey Motor
Inside The Abandoned Fishermans Bend Engine Plant: The Tragic Death of the Grey Motor On 29 November 1948, Ben Chifley unveiled the first Holden: she's a beauty. Fishermans Bend wasn't just a factory, it built bomber wings in 1942 and the engine that put Australia on wheels. The 2,160cc grey powered twenty-five Australian Grand Prix grids. But on 10 December 2013, GM's Dan Akerson called Australia a perfect storm. At 10:50am on 29 November 2016, 68 years later, engine #1,137,282 came off the line. The laser etcher fired: LAST. Today, the gates on Salmon Street are still there. The plant won Most Valuable Plant for Productivity in 2016, the year it closed. This is the story of how Australia built engines for 38 years and forgot how, and what that says about countries that stop. This is not just the story of the Grey Motor. It's the story of brands outliving countries. #HoldenGreyMotor #FishermansBendEnginePlant #AbandonedFactories #LostFactories #IndustrialDecline #AustralianManufacturing
