Evolution Without Escape: How Life Adapts in Isolation | SLICE EARTH | FULL DOC

On a wind swept Mediterranean islet, 200 km from the nearest mainland, almost all life vanished. Yet two castaways endured. A relic arum lily that can generate heat, mimic the smell of rotting flesh and trap flies with a light and texture funnel. And an endemic black lizard, Podarcis lilfordi lilfordi, whose bold curiosity helps it exploit every scrap the island offers. Filmmaker Toni Escandell, who has returned here for decades, reveals a tightly balanced world where survival is a constant negotiation. Flies become unwilling couriers, the plant runs a sophisticated pollination system, and the lizards learn to hunt, steal, and eventually disperse seeds by feeding on the plant’s fruit. In this isolated ecosystem, evolution has created a relationship found nowhere else, fragile, ingenious, and absolutely unique in the Mediterranean.
