Through an official letter, senior ISKCON Florida representative Bhadra Das explained that the deities used during their Rath Yatra are not the original Chaturdha Murti worshipped at the main Jagannath Temple. According to ISKCON, these are “Pratibhu Murti” or representative idols, which are considered secondary forms and are not established through the same elaborate rituals followed at the main temple. The statement further mentioned that these idols are treated as household deities and can participate in processions or festivals at any time, unlike the original deities of Lord Jagannath. ISKCON also cited practical reasons behind changing Rath Yatra dates in Western countries while claiming respect for Vedic Sanatan traditions. However, the explanation has triggered fresh debate among followers of Jagannath culture and tradition. Critics argue that Rath Yatra has a fixed sacred date according to Jagannath traditions and should be celebrated worldwide only on that specific tithi.
