At one time, a small Alan military nobility imposed their language on the mountain peoples of the Caucasus—not through weapons, but through the prestige of power, control of the Darial Gorge and the Silk Road, and an alliance with Byzantium. But the attacks of the Huns, Mongols, and Timur almost wiped out the male line of the steppe newcomers, and the ancient Caucasian gene pool once again prevailed, while preserving a language foreign to their blood.
