Arrested by Serbian authorities on Thursday, May 26, 2011, Ratko Mladić was detained in the United Nations detention unit in The Hague. The rules of detention in the detention unit comply with the highest international standards. Detainees are treated with respect for their dignity and rights, and all necessary arrangements are made for the preparation of their defense. The medical staff of the detention unit will conduct a full medical examination of Ratko Mladić, monitor his health, and provide any necessary treatment. The date of Ratko Mladić's initial court appearance will be announced in due course. Ratko Mladić, former chief of staff of the Bosnian Serb army, is accused of genocide and numerous other crimes committed against Bosnian Muslims, Bosnian Croats, and other non-Serb civilians in Bosnia and Herzegovina between May 1992 and the end of 1995. The indictment alleges that forces under Ratko Mladić's command perpetrated genocide, notably by summarily executing more than 7,000 Muslim men and boys in Srebrenica in July 1995.
