Figure skating is often called a biathlon, as the final score is determined by the sum of the scores for both programs. Another common saying is that you can't win a tournament with a short program, but you can lose it. Let's recall the skaters who literally pulled themselves from the bottom half of the standings to the podium last season after a poor short program, and those who, conversely, dropped several places due to mistakes in the free program. Mark Kondratyuk made a mistake on his signature move, the Salchow, in his short program at the Russian Championships, executing only a double jump combination instead of a quadruple. He was tenth after the first event, but thanks to a brilliant free program performance to the music from the film "Schindler's List," he soared to the podium and won bronze. Darya Sadkova successfully competed at the Grand Prix series (winning gold and silver) and skated a clean short program at the National Championships, finishing just outside the top three. However, Dasha's free skate was a disaster: she fell on her opening quadruple toe loop and also missed her triple jump combinations in two combinations. Her final result was 14th place. Gleb Lutfullin was hampered by an injury at the Grand Prix Final, which limited his preparation to just a couple of weeks. In his short program, he changed his routine and skated to a composition by Alexander Malinin, which he had previously performed to at exhibitions. He skated it cleanly and finished seventh. Everything went wrong in the free skate immediately: on his very first jump, Lutfullin fell and cut his leg, forcing him to continue despite the pain. Not only his jumping portion of the program suffered, but also his presentation. The result was disappointing: he finished at the bottom of the standings. Sofia Muravyova had a poor start at the National Championships: in the short program, she missed a triple Lutz and, surprisingly, her final spin. She finished in tenth place. Her second routine, choreographed by Benoit Richaud, was flawless—Sofia finished third in the free skate and fifth overall. Dina Khusnutdinova was competing in her first season at the senior level and had already convinced everyone of her consistency. However, the young skater faltered in her final event. After a confident triple Axel in the short program, she was in second place. In the free skate, she fell twice (including on her opening triple Axel), ultimately finishing in eighth place.
