※ This video is an excerpt from Extreme Jobs - Power Tunnel Construction , which aired on April 15, 2010. ▶ The First Step Toward Undergrounding: Drill a Vertical Shaft 30 Meters Below! A massive hole with a diameter of 10 meters has been drilled right in the middle of the city. It is a ‘vertical shaft’ that will connect the surface and the underground during the undergrounding process. If you descend the stairs 30 meters below ground, you will meet people wearing helmets and masks, working on the excavation. Since the work involves drilling through solid bedrock, noise and dust are a given! Because it is underground and difficult to exit once work begins, their unique method is to have a rope lowered down from the surface even for snacks! The workers resume work after their short but sweet snack break ends. We visit the site where the vertical shaft is being drilled, beneath the vertical shaft where the lights are on 24 hours a day. ▶ Safely Transport a 200-Ton Super-Large Excavator! - Shield TBM Method A construction site in Busan where vertical shaft work has been completed and tunnel excavation for a total of 2km is imminent. Suddenly, an urgent siren sounds. It is the day an excavation machine weighing over 200 tons is being brought into the tunnel 30 meters underground. As it is a piece of high-priced equipment worth billions of won—one of the few in Korea—compared to its immense weight, the task of moving it takes time. This requires advanced technology and specialized knowledge. Will they be able to safely complete the installation? ▶ An Unexpected Situation! The Excavation Machine Suddenly Stops! The workers in the vertical shaft monitor the work situation inside the tunnel via radios that receive signals between the surface and the underground. The site supervisor, suddenly bustling about after exchanging radio messages, hurriedly goes up to the surface where the machine control room is located to assess the situation... It turns out a mysterious defect has occurred in the machine used to transport the soil excavated during the tunnel! If work continues as is, it could damage the excavation machinery worth billions of won, so they decide to urgently halt the machinery operation... To make matters worse, unseasonal rain pours down on the site... Will they be able to resume work quickly? ▶ The final stage of the underground power line installation: Cable finishing! The final stage of the undergrounding project! Today is the day the grand finale of tunnel excavation is finally complete and the power cables are laid. The total length to be installed today alone is 260 meters... However, since the weight approaches 30 kg per meter, it is a task that can barely be finished only if all twenty workers are mobilized! The cables slowly descend through the maze-like tunnel... Nearly twenty workers all move the cables together... However, time is delayed because the work must be finished properly, but thanks to the teamwork of the people, they successfully transport the cables to the designated location in one go! Next, once the cable installation is complete and power is supplied, the "Snake Laying Method" is employed to prevent the expansion and contraction caused by heat generated within the wires themselves and temperature differences. Once their cable finishing is complete and the substation team arrives to complete the electrical installation, the undergrounding of power lines comes to a grand finale. Even amidst all kinds of dangerous and extreme situations every day, their sweat and perseverance—finding a sense of reward simply by being able to illuminate the nights of South Korea—will shine brighter than the light blooming in the darkness. ✔ Program Name: Extreme Jobs - Power Tunnel Construction ✔ Broadcast Date: September 28, 2010 #TVViewingChoiceDocumentary
