The border river winds its way for 45 km from its source in Bohemia to Bad Schandau. Frank Strohbach, a ranger in the core zone, philosophizes: "Nature doesn't need a core zone. It's actually just for us humans, to show that this is a particularly valuable piece of land." Cartographer Rolf Böhm, who hikes in the little-known Rabensteine Mountains, knows every corner of the valley. He even named a small Kirnitzsch island after his granddaughter. He regularly checks the accuracy of his hand-drawn hiking maps on site. The starting point for many hikers is a gigantic hydraulic structure – the Upper Lock. The river is dammed in the Kirnitzsch Gorge for this purpose. In the past, it was used for rafting, but today it's perfect for romantic canoe trips. Even as a child, boatman Jan Tlapak played on the Kirnitzsch: "I never thought I'd earn money on the Kirnitzsch." He was a police officer in Prague for 10 years. Then he was drawn back to the Kirnitzsch. When the lock is lowered, hundreds of logs used to be floated down the valley on the flood wave. Fifteen mills, the Kirnitzsch Valley, also known as the "Valley of the Mills," processed the wood. The Neumann Mill remains in its original condition to this day. It is home to the world's oldest groundwood mill and a Venetian sawmill designed by Leonardo da Vinci! Until 1990, athletes even used the raging spring floods for international kayaking competitions. However, local residents much prefer a more moderate flow of the Kirnitzsch. During the 2010 flood, when the entire valley was under water, the Kirnitzsch River caused millions of euros in damage. Buschmüller Stefan Gernert also had to rebuild large parts of his Buschmühle (bush mill). Most of the time, however, the Kirnitzsch is an idyllic little river. With at least 50 species of fish, "standardized electrofishing for fish population assessment" takes place at the Lower Lock every three years. How did the special brown trout, which only lives in the protected Kirnitzsch Valley, evolve? It is the only one with Danube genes and is the pride of Dr. Füllner from the fisheries authority. The rear of Saxon Switzerland is one of the most beautiful climbing areas in Germany. With breathtaking views and bizarre rock formations such as the Affensteine, Winterberg, Bloßstock, Kuhstall, and extreme climbing routes. However, this mountain idyll is no longer as free-spirited as it once was. Due to the core zone, the trail network is restricted, and rock climbing is no longer permitted. Nevertheless, climbing and hiking are booming. "Mountaineering is a sport for life," says Saxony's climbing legend Bernd Arnold. With his climbing companions, aged between 6! and 90!, he sets out on the rocks for breathtaking challenges. It's not just daring climbers who love the Kirnitzsch Valley. When the tracks for the legendary Kirnitzsch Valley Railway were laid 100 years ago, a new era began. The mills became restaurants and hostels for hikers. At that time, the Lichtenhain Waterfall became a magnet for visitors. At the foot of the waterfall, landlady Elfriede König runs the restaurant of the same name. Now in the fifth generation! From Wasserfall, the nostalgic Kirnitzsch Valley Railway runs to the mouth of the river in Bad Schandau. Along the way, traffic is on the left, like in England. Extremely critical for drivers! Rockfalls and mudslides make the journey an adventure in winter. Nevertheless, for driver Frank Drzymala, it was a childhood dream to later drive the Kirnitzsch Valley Railway: "This is the only railway in Europe that still runs with such a special steering system." The dedicated Railway Friends Association ensures that the nostalgic railway will continue to run through the wild and romantic Kirnitzsch Valley in the future.
