In the Gallery: Andrea Schlieker on Georg Baselitz at White Cube Bermondsey | White Cube

Andrea Schlieker reflects on Georg Baselitz’s exhibition ‘Back Again’ at White Cube Bermondsey. One of the last exhibitions conceived by the late German artist Georg Baselitz (1938–2026), ‘Back Again’ takes its title from one of the artist’s final paintings, a poignant testament to his enduring return to the motifs that shaped his practice over more than six decades. Bringing together 30 paintings made between 2023 and 2025, the exhibition revisits subjects including the eagle, the figure of the Hero and his wife and longtime muse, Elke. In this film, independent curator Andrea Schlieker considers how these recurring motifs became increasingly crystallised in Baselitz’s late work, while his approach to painting grew ever more radical. She explores the significance of the eagle, the artist’s use of gold, and the visible traces of his physical process, revealing how biography, memory and place remained central to his practice until the very end. ‘Georg Baselitz: Back Again’ is on view at White Cube Bermondsey until 30 August 2026.
