One woman, one tiny yard, and a vision no one saw coming

I'm Jay, I ask strangers if I can see their backyard. Every summer, I spend the last weekend of July visiting Garden Walk Buffalo. Over the years, many gardens have left me in wonder and awe—but there is one tiny backyard, which gave me something truly special. But it wasn’t its tiny size that made it unforgettable—it’s the creative way the gardener transformed her “trash” into the most surprising kind of gift. And it’s not the kind of gift you might expect. She turned her tiny backyard into an intricate outdoor living space, using every square inch in a way that’s both clever and deeply human. The result is a garden that she shares not only with her family, but with complete strangers. Her living creations come alive when visitors stream in and interact with them, and no one could ever imagine that those pieces were made from things others would simply throw away. Like many before me, I was struck by a kind of magical spark in this backyard. I realized that the gardener offered me something rare and utterly precious: a renewed sense of curiosity, and a fresh way of seeing the world around us. And I think that’s the greatest gift one can possibly receive. This is the garden of Miriam and her husband, in Buffalo, New York, USDA Zone 6. They have been opening their garden every July on Garden Walk Buffalo for over 23 years.
