Amberley is a village and civil parish in the Horsham District of West Sussex, England. It is situated at the foot of the South Downs. Amberley Castle dates back over 900 years. Originally a manor house owned by the Bishops of Chichester, it was fortified in the 14th century with the addition of curtain walls, a portcullis, and towers, giving it the character of a true medieval castle. Following the English Civil War, the castle was partially dismantled by Parliamentary forces of Oliver Cromwell. Over the centuries, it evolved from a defensive stronghold to a luxurious private residence and is now a distinguished hotel.
