Job's friends were three men named Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar. They appear in the biblical story in the context of Job's suffering. Eliphaz is identified as "the Temanite," Bildad as "the Shuhite," and Zophar is called "the Naamathite." Each one left his own land and went to Uz, the name of the place where Job lived. It seems that Job's friends were rich men and enjoyed a high social position. Job himself, before the calamities that struck him, was also a very rich man. In fact, he is described in the Bible as the most important man in the East. Job's friends cared about him. When they approached Job, they were very sorry about the whole situation. They wept, tore their clothes, threw dirt on their heads, and sat silently with Job on the ground for a week. But after that, the Bible says that Job broke his silence and began to pour out his heart. Job was dealing with an avalanche of feelings. He was so distressed that he cursed the day of his birth, while directing a series of questions to God. Job’s friends then began to speak out, too. And that’s where they failed. Instead of simply listening to their suffering friend and trying to comfort him, they set out to rebuke Job while trying to explain the reason for his suffering. They could have served as witnesses to Job’s faithfulness, but instead they played the role of his accusers.
