The highlight of the two-and-a-half-month basic training is the final recruit inspection. Leon and his comrades have to run through all the scenarios he's learned: overcoming obstacles with 30 kilograms of gear, surviving a simulated ambush, setting up an improvised camp, conducting reconnaissance while wearing a gas mask, and transporting the wounded. It's exhausting, and many consider giving up. Fritz is chosen to take the oath of allegiance on behalf of his comrades. With this oath, he pledges to give his life for democracy and freedom. The 23-year-old is a career soldier with the mountain infantry. Whether he actually takes this oath seriously and completes his training, however, remains to be seen.
