Yamaha DX7 vs MODX: Can the MODX Recreate These Iconic Sounds?
Yamaha DX7 vs MODX: Can the MODX Recreate These Iconic Sounds? No talking — just pure DX7 sound! This is a direct comparison of Yamaha DX7 presets played on both the original DX7 and the modern MODX. In this video, I compare the iconic sounds of the original Yamaha DX7 with the Yamaha MODX, using the exact same DX7 patch bank loaded into the MODX. This is a direct sound comparison to see how closely the MODX can replicate the character of the original DX7. These sounds aren’t included by default, but I found a DX7 MkII sound bank online and converted it for use on the MODX using Yamaha’s free conversion tool https://shop.usa.yamaha.com/en/fmconv... There’s also an official free DX7 expansion for the MODX that you can download directly from Yamaha, but for this video, I went with the MKI and MkII sound banks ➡️ All volume levels have been normalized in Logic Pro to ensure a fair comparison. Both the DX7 and MODX were recorded in mono through my Universal Audio Apollo Twin, 🎹 The Full Tines and E. Piano patches include a touch of chorus and reverb 🎧 All other sounds are played dry, with no added effects. Let me know in the comments which version you prefer! Sounds featured: • Full Tines – famously used in ‘80s ballads by Phil Collins (One More Night) and Chicago (Hard Habit to Break). Whitney Houston etc • E. Piano 1 – used by George Michael (Careless Whisper) and Sade (Smooth Operator), Whitney. Houston and heard in many iconic ’80s ballads. • Bass 1 – used by A-ha (Take On Me) and Kenny Loggins (Danger Zone) and widely used in ’80s FM synth pop basslines 1 • Bass 2 – used by Berlin (Take My Breath Away) • Marimba famously featured in Axel F by Harold Faltermeyer, and used by Janet Jackson in When I Think of You • Tubular Bells – used by Paul Hardcastle and most likely in Top Gun • Brass 1 – used by Phil Collins (Sussudio), Level 42 (Something About You), Janet Jackson (Nasty) Follow me : Instagram: / nicolasmelis08 Bandcamp: https://nicolasmelis.bandcamp.com/alb...
