Elisabeth of Austria - A Habsburg Queen Of France
Elisabeth of Habsburg, Archduchess of Austria was born on July 5, 1554 and died on January 22, 1592. She was born in Vienna, and became queen of France from 1571 to 1574 through her marriage to Charles IX of France. Elisabeth was the daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II and Mary of Austria, infanta of Spain and niece of King Philip II of Spain, thus she was a member of the Austrian branch of the House of Habsburg. During her reign as queen of France, she gave birth to a daughter, Marie-Elisabeth, who died at the age of 5. After the death of her husband, king Charles IX, Elisabeth returned to Austria where she died at the age of 37. She lived for three and a half years at the French court, which was dominated at that time by the Queen Mother Catherine de Medici, in a country divided by the Wars of Religion. Married to a man whose language she did not speak, she kept to her function as sovereign and royal wife, not favoring any party and playing no political role.
