This is one of the most important and shocking photographs of World War II. Taken in May 1944 on the ramp at Auschwitz-Birkenau, the photograph reveals secrets over the course of more than 80 years—about the victims, their executioners, and a single gesture that decided life or death. It shows the moment of selection of Hungarian Jews deported to the camp. The SS doctor's finger pointing left or right was a parody of the Last Judgement. Some went straight to the gas chambers, others were given a few months to live. The story of this photograph would not be known if not for 19-year-old Lili Jakob. After the Death March and the liberation of the Mittelbau-Dora camp, she discovered an album titled "Aussiedlung der Juden aus Ungarn." She recognized herself and her own family in the photographs. Throughout her life, she gave these photographs to the families of the victims, finally donating them to Yad Vashem—as irrefutable proof of the Holocaust. In this material, we examine not only the victims but also the perpetrators immortalized in the photograph. One of them is an SS man whose identity was only recognized in 2007—by… his own son. A man who became a pastor after the war, and whose family knew nothing about Auschwitz.
