Why do we need the term "cognac"? I think the term "cognac" itself is long outdated. It's no longer important! Wouldn't it be simpler to put stars on the drink's label? So much work has gone into establishing and strengthening the word "cognac" in the Russian language and in laws (GOSTs). And all for what? How many battles have been fought over "cognac"—how many desperate disputes—and for what? For example, take Metaxa—an authentic Greek drink. It's not pure brandy and not cognac at all—it's Metaxa! Or imagine removing the word "cognac" from bottles of Ararat or Noah. What would change? People who discovered these drinks will continue to buy them; new consumers won't be looking for the word "cognac" on the back label. But these are just my thoughts and my reasoning.
