Shibaura Institute of Technology (SIT) is focused on providing hands-on learning opportunities to students from all the world. SIT’s aim is to foster engineers and scientists who are able to learn from the world around them, and at the same time contribute to global sustainability. Social contribution is at the heart of SIT. To achieve this, SIT works closely with government, industry and academia in Japan and internationally to identify the most pressing issues and help solve them. This is done through their Global Technology Initiative (GTI) Consortium. One of the GTI Consortium’s major projects is Global PBL (Project Based Learning). Since the establishment of its predecessor, Tokyo Higher School of Industry and Commerce, in 1927, it has maintained “learning through practice” as its philosophy in the education of engineers. SIT was the only private science and engineering university selected for the Top Global University Project sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and will receive support from the ministry for 10 years starting from the 2014 academic year.
