Rare People. The Setos. A Divided Kingdom. For centuries, the Setos were baptized and married in the same churches, laid to rest in the same cemeteries... Until the 20th century. Neighboring farmsteads found themselves on opposite sides of the border. Entire families were divided in half. Invisible barbed wire stretched between Russia and Estonia, across the rich fields that are the heart of the Seto lands. And now, only once a year, the divided people are united again. In Russia, according to the 2021 census, 234 people identified themselves as Setos. In Estonia, according to the 2011 census, their number was 114. Among the small peoples of Russia, there are those who have not assimilated among their numerous neighbors and have not lost their distinctiveness. Their numbers sometimes do not exceed a few thousand, and sometimes even hundreds. Their way of life has remained virtually unchanged over the past thousand years.
