Good gear, perfect listener and speaker placement, solid room treatment – the works. But his mixes? They still didn’t sound right outside the studio. We went through his setup and found the missing link – speaker calibration. We did it together. The difference was huge. His mixes started translating perfectly on every system – car speakers, headphones, laptops, you name it. That’s all it took in his case. Everything else was already in place! You might be surprised, but even though I’m “the acoustics guy”, I’m actually all for using speaker calibration. It is just one step in the treatment process. It’s not the end-all, be-all. But especially in your home studio, it can really tie everything together. Kind of like mastering a song before it goes out into the wild. You want that quality checking and polish that really makes it shine. This is why I made my latest YouTube video. I get tons of emails asking about speaker calibration – how to use it, when to use it, and if it’s worth it. So, I thought I’d put together a quick step-by-step masterclass. Here’s a sneak peek: When to Use Speaker Calibration: Why it’s the final step in your studio treatment process and when to re-calibrate. How to Use Calibration Systems: Tips to get the best results without losing your speaker’s headroom. Types of Calibration Systems: My take on automated systems like SonarWorks and those from Genelec and Neumann. Manual Calibration Tips: How to adjust parametric EQ settings yourself.
