Charlie Adam I The Next Chapter | Fleetwood Town FC
Charlie Adam has embarked on his first job in football management at Fleetwood Town FC. PLZ Soccer traveled to Lancashire to speak with Ex-Rangers, Liverpool, Dundee and Scotland midfielder Charlie Adam about his first football coaching job in the dugout for EFL League One club Fleetwood Town FC. Industry and the ideal place to have a holiday on the northwest coast of England, but football has a strong place in the local community. Fleetwood Town FC are currently languishing at the bottom end of The League 1 table. Ambitions of silverware have been replaced with survival, and a former Scotland International has embraced the challenge of trying to guide the club away from relegation. "At the moment, survival is our priority, you know we're in a position where we have to get above the line," says Charlie Adam, who can look back on a successful playing career that started at Rangers and took him on a journey to Blackpool, Liverpool, Stoke, Reading, and his hometown Club Dundee. "I felt it was the right time. I just needed clarity in terms of where I should be, and fortunately enough, that is close to home, a club that I know." Capped 26 times for Scotland, he's ready to use all that experience to deliver success in his first managerial appointment. "I'm trying to use what I did as a player to help them on the pitch. Everyone's at different levels, and you know, you got to try and coach them and make them better players." So, Alex Ferguson once told him, "Don't pick a fight because the fight will come to you." Charlie reflects on becoming the man in charge, "It's a bit different being in charge of a football club on your own, but it's something I've always wanted to do. Even when I was playing, I was always interested in what the coaching side was all about." Despite the challenges, including being the go-to person for everything from the chef's questions to departure times, Adam is focused on the short-term goal of survival and using his experience to navigate the challenges of management. He emphasizes the importance of adapting to the role of a manager, engaging with players to improve performance, and the learning curve involved in understanding individual capabilities and the collective strength of the team. Adam speaks about the evolution of coaching, the balance between discipline and support, the transition from player to manager, and the valuable lessons learned from esteemed figures like Sir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes. As he embarks on this new chapter with Fleetwood Town FC, his focus is squarely on the immediate task at hand, demonstrating the depth of his commitment and the breadth of his ambition in the challenging world of football management.
