ndian Rock Python എന്നു വിളിക്കുന്ന Python molurus എന്ന പാമ്പിനെയാണ് നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടിൽ പെരുമ്പാമ്പ് - മലമ്പാമ്പ് എന്നൊക്കെ വിളിക്കുന്നത്. ഇവർ പൊതുവെ മൂന്നു മീറ്ററോളം നീളം ഉള്ളവരായിരിക്കും . ഇന്തോനേഷ്യയിൽ സ്ത്രീയെ വിഴുങ്ങിയ പെരുമ്പാമ്പ് Reticulated python എന്ന ഇനമാണ്. Malayopython reticulatus എന്നാണ് അതിന്റെ ശാസ്ത്രനാമം. തെക്ക് കിഴക്ക് ഏഷ്യയിൽ കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ഇവർ ഇന്ത്യയിൽ നിക്കോബാർ ദ്വീപുകളിൽ മാത്രമേ ഉള്ളു . 9 മീറ്ററിനടുത്ത് നീളം വെക്കുന്ന ഉഗ്ര രൂപികളാണവ ർ . ദേഹത്ത് വലപോലെ അടയാളങ്ങളുണ്ടാവും. നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടിലെ പഴങ്കഥകളിൽ കാട്ടിൽ വിറകു ശേഖരിക്കാൻ പോയ ആളുകളെ പെരുമ്പാമ്പ് വിഴുങ്ങിയതും മരത്തിന്റെ പൊങ്ങിയ വേരിനുള്ളിലൂടെ നുഴഞ്ഞ് കുടലിലെ ഇരയെ ഞെരുക്കി കൊല്ലുന്നതായും ഒക്കെയുള്ള നിറം പിടിപ്പിച്ച കഥകൾ ഏറെ ഉണ്ട്. പക്ഷെ Python molurus ഇതുവരെയായി മുതിർന്ന മനുഷ്യരെ വിഴുങ്ങിയ സംഭവങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടായിട്ടില്ല. മരത്തിന്റെ വേരിലും മറ്റും ഉരച്ച് ഉള്ളിലെ ഇരയെ കൊല്ലും എന്നതും കഥമാത്രമാണ്.
