Ce s-a descoperit sub Piața Unirii? Arheologii găsesc strada pierdută Căldărari

In the heart of Bucharest, beneath the hustle and bustle of Union Square, lies a fascinating story of the old city. Archaeologist Teodor Ignat from the Bucharest City Museum takes us on a unique journey through ruins, old walls and fragments of the capital’s past. Recent archaeological research has brought to light the old Căldărari Street, one of the city’s oldest commercial arteries, demolished in the 19th century to build the Ghica Halls (Union Hall). The material captures the overlapping historical layers of Bucharest, revealing not only the urban structure but also the ingenuity of its former inhabitants. At the heart of the discovery is a 19th-century sewer, made of river stones and hardwood, with a slope of 3‰, intended to drain waters towards Dâmbovița — a remarkable testament to the urban planning of yesteryear. Among the ruins are also vestiges of the House of the Steward, a massive construction mentioned on the plans of 1791, as well as evidence of intense craft activity: workshops of boilermakers and butners who worked with metal, copper and wood. The archaeologist explains in detail each stage of the evolution of the area, from the post-1800 period to the radical transformations at the end of the 19th century, when new halls were built and the first modern sewage systems were introduced. The discoveries, complemented by coins, building materials, bones and ceramics, offer a complete picture of daily life in Bucharest of old. This material is a rare window into the unseen story of the capital, a dialogue between past and present that helps us better understand how the city we know today was formed.
