CRUISE 5 WITH BYSON KAULA PART 2 - 20 JUNE 2021

The story of Byson Kaula is a mesmerising but sad one. He was arrested and sentenced to death in 1992. He was not hanged though - for three times the hangman, a South African who used to visit Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe to hang people on the death row, spared him. Each time he would stop hanging people when there were just a few names remaining on the list. One time Byson was the only one left. After his case went for retrial he was released and is now a free man. He says despite doing time for 24 years he has not been compensated. But he adds, this is nothing compared to the freedom he enjoys now as an ex-convict. He now works with an organisation that visits prisoners to help them socially and spiritually.
