Junji Mukai was a painter who traveled throughout Japan after the war, depicting thatched-roof houses. His experiences studying in Paris, France at a young age formed the foundation of his painting. ■Setagaya Art Museum / Curator Marona Higuchi "The most distinctive feature is that she went to the Louvre Museum every day and copied works by various Western masters of the past. She was able to set up an easel in front of the paintings and copy them. Through this, she learned about color and composition from Western works." This is a copy of a work by the French painter Jean-François Millet. ■Setagaya Art Museum / Curator Marona Higuchi "Mukai kept a diary about his copying while staying in France, and he wrote, 'Regarding Millet's "The Seamstress," I am once again surprised by the depth, breadth, and yet delicacy of Millet's tone.' He was researching what colors to use to approach the colors Millet used, but his works also show that he was studying the overall style at the same time."
