【Start a Zazen practice】full version | Nanrei Yokota
Start a Zazen practice - full version - This is a brief guide of “how to practise zazen” introduced by Nanrei Yokota, the abbot of Engakuji temples in Japan. Engakuji temple is one of the head temples of the Rinzai school Buddhism. He has practised zazen for more than 45 years and teaches the way he thinks through his experience here. “Start a Zazen practice” is created mainly for beginners or those who practise zazen at home or online. Then, it is constituted by following three sessions; how to cross legs, how to set body and how to breathe. This is the full version. The first lesson, how to cross legs, is about how to make a fixed base to straighten up your upper body. There are following three ways; chair zazen, seiza, and crossing legs (kekkahuza & hankahuza). As for the second one, how to set body, he teaches the way to vertically align your upper body by stretching exercises. This process is an important key to take a deep breath. In the last session, how to breathe, what is most significant is not to control the breath but to watch the breath. Now you breathe in or out? Feel and enjoy it. For some reason, you will get calm through observing your breathing. Hope these lessons are helpful for your zazen practice.
