For Your power is the foundation of Your justice, Your sovereignty spares all things. You show your power to those who do not believe in the fullness of your might, and you punish the insolence of those who know it. You wield power, yet you judge gently and govern us with great circumspection, for it is yours to do so when you will. You have taught your people by this conduct that the righteous should love others. And you have instilled in your children great hope, that after their transgressions you grant repentance. SECOND READING Rom 8:26-27 The Holy Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness Brothers: The Holy Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness. For when we do not know how to pray as we ought, the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia GOSPEL Mt 13:24-43 The Parable of the Weeds Among the Wheat Jesus told this parable to the crowds: "The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while they were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away. And when the wheat had sprouted and produced heads, then the weeds also appeared. The owner's servants came and said to him, 'Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?' He answered them, 'An enemy did this.' The servants said to him, "Do you want us to go and gather it?" But he said to them, "No, lest while you gather the weeds you also uproot the wheat. Let them both grow until the harvest. And at harvest time I will say to the reapers, 'First gather the weeds and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.'" He put another parable before them: "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown, it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and nest in its branches." He told them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until it was leavened all through." Jesus spoke all these things to the crowds in parables; without a parable he said nothing to them. This was to fulfill what the prophet had said: "I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden from the foundation of the world." Then he sent the crowds away and returned home. There the disciples came to him, saying, "Explain to us the parable of the weeds." He answered, "He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world; the good seed are the sons of the kingdom, but the weeds are the sons of the evil one. The enemy who sowed the weeds is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world, and the reapers are the angels. Just as the weeds are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the world. The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness, and throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
