Dr Richard Maponya speaks to SABC

Godfather of black business, Dr Richard Maponya, was awarded a luminary award by the Free Market Foundation on Wednesday. He is famous for building the Maponya Mall in Soweto in 2007 after eyeing out the land almost 30 years earlier. But way before democracy and BEE he had already established a thriving empire despite the restrictions of apartheid. Government says South Africa should welcome Nigeria's recent leap to the largest economy on the continent. But Maponya says the news made him cry. He started our interview with strong words for trade unions involved in current strike action in mining.
