In my role as a World Horse Welfare field officer, I meet some unforgettable characters — and Glen the donkey is one I’ll never forget. Glen was living in a small field in north London, right in the heart of a community. He was loved by everyone, fed by passers-by, and had become a local celebrity. But behind the smiles, Glen was struggling. He was overweight, his feet were in poor condition, and his elderly Shetland pony companion was suffering too. Sometimes, the hardest part of this job isn’t enforcement — it’s working closely with owners to help them make the right decision for their animals. Sadly, the pony’s condition meant euthanasia was the kindest option. That left Glen alone — and donkeys bond for life. After careful discussion, the owner made the compassionate decision to sign Glen over to World Horse Welfare. He was brought safely to Hall Farm, where our dedicated team of vets, grooms and farriers began his rehabilitation. Glen has now had his feet treated, his health assessed, and is starting his journey back to a healthy weight. Donkeys are often misunderstood — labelled as stubborn, when in reality they are incredibly sensitive and stoic, often hiding pain. Glen is calm, gentle, and has age on his side. Once his rehabilitation is complete, he has a real chance of finding a loving new home. With winter approaching, donkeys like Glen need us more than ever.
