First Person Present Tense Verbs:    • 300 Essential VERBS in Levantine Arabic | ...   ** Corrections ** None ** Notes ** 1. Levantine Arabic refers to a mix of different spoken dialects, therefore you won’t find some of these words in written text. Also, harakaat (diacritics) may change depending on a region’s pronunciation. A common variant for first person past tense verbs is adding a kassra to the second to last letter of the verb, which adds an “I” sound. For instance you will hear “I finished” pronounced as خَلَّصْت “khallast” or خَلَّصِت “khallasit”. Another example is “I wrote” which is pronounced كَتَبْت “katabt” or كَتَبِت “katabit”. People will automatically adjust their pronunciation to what naturally flows in the sentence. The first pronunciation (without the extra kassra) is more classical and closer to the formal Arabic structure. The second pronunciation (with the extra kassra) is common in the Levant region and feels more fluid in colloquial speech. 2. Some verbs are spelt with certain letters, but have evolved to be pronounced with a different letter in spoken Levantine Arabic. For instance, the formal transliteration for “I tasted” ذُقْت is “thu’t” but in many spoken Levantine dialects, it will be pronounced “du’t” 3. There can be multiple ways to say a verb. For instance, “I made” can be عْمِلْت (‘imilt) or سَوَّيْت (sawwayt). 4. Some verbs don’t match perfectly with their translation. For instance, I painted/I applied is دَهَنْت (dahant). In English we can say “I apply to a job” or “I apply cream”, but in Arabic the word “dahant” is solely for the second meaning “I applied cream”. If you wanted to say “I applied to a job” you would use the other “I applied” which is قَدَّمْت (‘addamt). I tried my best to clear any confusions while keeping the video succinct, but this is something very important to keep in mind!
