[Anchor] The El Niño phenomenon, considered the biggest variable affecting weather not only in Korea but globally this year, has officially begun. As this El Niño is expected to develop to record-breaking levels around this autumn, concerns about extreme weather anomalies are growing. Reporter Yoo Tu-kwon reports. [Reporter] Sea surface temperatures in the eastern Pacific near the equator have risen sharply, eventually entering the El Niño phase. U.S. weather authorities have analyzed that there is a high probability this El Niño will develop into a "Super El Niño," the strongest in 76 years. [John Gottschalk / National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Climate Prediction Center: So far, this El Niño meets all the conditions to develop into the strongest El Niño since 1950.] Typically, El Niño brings extremely different weather to the continents on opposite sides of the Pacific Ocean. In Asia, record-breaking heatwaves or droughts have occurred frequently. Major grain-producing regions in India, Thailand, Indonesia, and Australia are already facing setbacks in planting and harvesting due to unseasonably hot weather and drought. The temperature is too high.] Conversely, the western regions of North and South America are highly likely to suffer from powerful hurricanes or heavy rainfall. However, many scientists agree that a vicious cycle is continuing, where global warming triggers stronger El Niño, and El Niño accelerates global warming.
