BRILLIANT BOBBINS from YORK- Bringing a SMALL FIND to LIFE!

How can you manage to braid long lengths without getting tangled up? If you've ever tried to make enough braid to go all the way around a hem in one go, you will have come across the problem of managing the long lengths of thread, they want to tangle up, the weight and awkwardness of handling so much thread at once can be very frustrating and impact the regularity of your finished product. Bobbins! Bobbins are the way, but unfortunately archeological evidence of bobbins from the Viking Era is very limited. We have thread winders from Birka and other locations, indented squares and rectangles, which are believed to have held lengths of thread for sewing, but these are not easy to use when braiding. I wanted a solution to these issues that I felt happy using in the LHE. After combing through a lot of academic work looking for something with the right shape, with similarities to modern bobbins, I came across the inspiration for the bobbins I have here. I am soooo excited to finally have these beautiful, hand crafted bobbins ready to work with! They are based on a find from York, detailed in Textile Production at 16-22 Coppergate By Penelope Walton Rogers. While they are believed to be tapestry bobbins, they also work very well when used to make longer lengths of cordage. So I hope you will join me as I get joyfully nerdy about digging through research to find a LHE worthy solution to an ancient problem, and make some braid to finish off the woollen dress I made during the last series.
