PLEASE READ THE HYMN STORY OF THE DIVINELY GIVEN SONG "BELOVED JESUS IS HOLDING MY RIGHT HAND". -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Glorifying God, may I brief the background events that led to the composition of the divinely given song "Beloved Jesus is holding my right hand". In 1977, I was in Wayanad, on the north-eastern part of Kerala state, India, in connection with my posting in Canara Bank, a leading bank of the Government of India. I was invited by the priest of a Roman Catholic church to address his Sunday school students scheduled on Sunday, the 17 th April, commencing at 9.30 AM. The parish was six kilometers from the place of my stay. I was advised to start my journey at 7 AM and I might require two hours by walk to reach the church as the terrain was hilly without proper infrastructure and transportation facilities. The most common mode of transportation was walking. So, I started at 6 in the morning, one hour earlier. It was really tedious to walk the ups and downs of the rural road with a heavy box of booklets for children in my left hand and an open umbrella in my right hand. There was thick mist all around and cold wind blowing. The rough rocky belt on the right side of the road was hardly visible. By the time I reached half way, I was sweating like anything and feeling thirsty. Besides, I felt excruciating pain all through the muscles and there was no source of drinking water. I learned from a passer-by that I had to walk three more Kilometers to reach the church. I was panicked to see it was 8:30 AM by my watch. How could I reach the church in one hour as I was totally exhausted? I saw the mist capped hills and valleys ahead and turned back to see the mud path. I was in despair and I sat helplessly on a small rock on the wayside. Now I remembered how my office sub staff Mr. Kunjuraman, a native of Waynad, used to help me to pass over the ups and downs of rural roads, stretching out his right hand for me, while we were on official duties. Remembering Psalm 73:23 and 24, I prayed in tears to the Lord "Oh! Lord of Asaph, kindly stretch out for me Thy right hand and help me to reach the church in time. While I was praying in tears, I heard a still small voice calling me 'My son, my son" just like the tender voice of my late dad. When I opened my eyes I was astonished to see the pierced right hand of Lord Jesus being stretched towards me. To my surprise that precious hand caught hold of my right hand and started to lead me forward. Immediately I got perfectly relieved of my muscle pain and intense thirst. I was reinvigorated. I started to sing a new song in tongues. With in one or two minutes, our Lord granted its first stanza and chorus in Malayalam, my mother tongue, despite the fact I am neither musically trained nor well acquainted with any musical instruments. At that time, the vision of the right hand of our Lord disappeared. Singing the new song and rejoicing in our Lord, while I was rushing along the road, He conferred five more additional stanzas and blessed me to complete the song before I reached the church at 9.25 AM, five minutes early. It was firstly published by well known Maramon Convention, the biggest Christian Convention in Asia, and became its hit song of that year. Praise the Lord! While I was in Toronto to speak at certain programmes, our beloved Lord blessed me to translate it into English. We present it to you for the glory of God.
