Kara Mehmed is a bosanci, the palace gardener. In the mornings, he trims a hundred rose bushes. By evening, if ordered, he will strangle a man with a silk cord. One pair of hands for two jobs. The bosanci was a corps of a thousand men who tended the gardens, rowed the sultan's boat, and executed those whose blood was too noble for the executioner's axe. Nobility was not slain—the blood of the highborn is sacred, and the axe was considered desecration. They were strangled with silk: quietly, in the palace, without a single wound, so that they could be buried with honors. Kara Mehmed joined the corps through the devshirme, a blood tax, as a child from a Christian village in the Balkans. He became the best in the corps—and the best runner, which was important because of a strange custom: a condemned vizier could run through the gardens to the Bosphorus gates, and if he reached the chief executioner, the execution was commuted to exile. Over four hundred years, only a few made it. Kara Mehmed rose from assistant to bosancibashi—the head of the corps and the sultan's personal oarsman. The price was a man he loved: the grand vizier and patron, accused of treason—and the sultan appointed Kara Mehmed as the executioner, as a test of his loyalty.
